As 2006 draws to a close, I want to take a minute to talk a little about two great Northwest bands that called it quits this year.

I was fortunate enough to see I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch In the House twice in 2006, and both times it was a tremendous experience. While they certainly fit into the alt-country scene, they brought rocking, electric sets and songs about social issues and world affairs where quiet introspective songs are becoming the stereotype. If you missed out on seeing the band live, all their albums are still available on CDBaby. There is also some talk of another album of unreleased material coming out in the near future.

Very little can be said about Sleater-Kinney that hasn't already been covered and often by people far more articulate than myself. As big a fan as I am of their music, I find myself thinking more about the influence they'll continue to have on the industry. They became one of the most respected bands in the world without the benefit of the major label promotion machine. I think you can see why I find this encouraging. I hate to even bring this up for fear that it will express the opposite of what I have in mind, but I think (hope) that the days of stereotyping, glass ceilings, and kitsch factor of WOMEN IN ROCK have finally ended, and Sleater-Kinney certainly had something to do with that. I got to see their farewell show last summer, and I will never forget it. Get used to it. I'll be talking about it forever.
